Kids in the Creek, Madison Middle School, 2017

Ivy River Partners has teamed up with Madison Middle School teachers to bring a Kids in the Creek program to 8th graders at the school. Following the curriculum, we supplement their instruction and provide hands on experience in watersheds, river basins, water quality monitoring methods, and macroinvertebrate sampling. This program will reach approximately 200 students per year.

This is a two day event organized by Madison County Soil & Water Conservation District for all 5th graders in Madison County Schools. Students rotate through different natural resource conservation stations including water quality, air quality, wildlife, forestry and more. Professionals from agencies and organizations such as the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Department of Environmental Quality, and the Environmental Quality Institutegraciously volunteer their time to provide quality instruction on their resource of expertise.

Other Education Opportunities

We can connect you to our partners to provide water quality instruction tailored to your group. Here are some examples:

  • Presentations to university classes and community groups
  • Macroinvertebrate sampling for all ages- This is essentially kids in the creek looking for bugs and making the connection between bio-indicators and water health.
  • Enviroscape- This is a portable, hands-on model of a watershed that can easily be brought to the classroom or any event. It is used to demonstrate the flow of water in a watershed and how pollutants enter a stream. It helps people of all ages understand the sources and prevention of water pollution.
